Our Sustainability Pledge

As our world is being increasingly impacted by climate change it feels timely to discuss the sustainability credentials of our community organic veggie box programs. The good news is that the very act of participating in the program reduces your personal and local community's environmental footprint.  The bushfires ravaging Australia and the associated suffocating smoke are one of the first tangible experiences many Australians have had of climate change. There has been a huge amount of grief and loss for all Australians, residents directly effected, our environment and our native animals. One of the very few positives to come out of this catastrophic experience has been an accelerated awareness and urgency to reduce our collective and personal climate footprint.

How do our community organic veggie box programs make a difference?

By working as a community organisation run by volunteers our programs greatly reduce delivery and retail costs along with their associated energy and fuel use. Staffing and warehousing  costs and their energy consumption are also eliminated. No plastic bags are used and members pick  up their produce when they pick their children up from school. We use exisiting school halls after school hours rather than having to build new outlets. Members bring their own shopping bags and food miles are reduced by members not having to make a second trip to the supermarket. Bulk delivery to one central location eliminates individual home delivery costs / fuel etc. Funds from the program are used to teach sustainable veggie gardening and healthy eating classes in local schools which adds to creating generational change.

Sustainability of Organic Farming.
As all the produce is 100% certified organic the associated environmental benefits are significant. Organic farming rebuilds soil health and stops toxic chemicals from getting into our water supply. Organic farming results in greater biodiversity with insect populations benefiting. Organic farming releases fewer greenhouse emissions due to less industrialisation. Organic farmers don’t rely on non-renewable oil based fertilizers and pesticides.
